Friday 13th March 1953

Dearest Mummy,

The days seem to fly past each week & I get nothing done – each week I think I will write you a nice long letter & each week I find I am so late that I had better just send off one of these. I got your Air Letter mailed on the 2nd yesterday- thank you so much for it. The only B.P. in it was a query as to whether Cec ever reads your letters now! Sometimes yes & sometimes no! When there is a bit about people you meet & go & see etc. he gets very fogged as he can never remember who is who, & then he gives up, but mainly he reads them & enjoys hearing your comments! Talking of people you meet & relatives etc. you were asking in one of your last letters about whether to give Yvonne my address & tell her to come & see me or not. Well, I feel that maybe it is mean & inhospitable of me, but I think better not, Mummy. I am sorry for her & think she has had a miserable time & will find it very difficult to settle down over here, & if she were on her own I wouldn’t mind, but the sister with the rotten husband living here is too much! I think really we have plenty to cope with at the moment, & I’d hate to get involved in a family with a husband like that- poor girls- they certainly had poor luck, didn’t they?

I was very sorry to hear that Marga hasn’t been well & has gone into hospital for a check up. I do hope it is nothing serious & that she will soon be well again. She seems to run a lot on a sort of nervous energy which must take it out of her, so I do hope it is only a good rest that she needs. I think I must have got a baby congratulation card from A. Ettie, as I have her down on my writing list, but can’t find a letter from her at the moment! I got Christmas cards from Monie & Mill, but not Margs.

We have been doing a little entertaining recently, as I felt as if I’d never see anyone unless I did, so a week ago tonight we had Ruth & Keith to dinner. They are the couple in Cec’s Lab. who got married last summer – we had them to bridge in Eastview once. Then on Wed. we had Joan to dinner – she is Dr. Herzberg’s pretty secretary – I have met her at a lot of the Lab. “do’s” & like her – a lot of her slightly “sarky” remarks remind me of Dottie! Tomorrow Jim & Lee & Barry are coming over at tea time & staying overnight with us. Their old car isn’t running now & so it is very difficult for us to arrange just an evening & anyway, Lindy & Barry have such a good time together that we wanted them to have a little time to play. Lindy is always talking of “Dim, Lee & Barry” & Lee says Barry talks of Linda every day.

Barry is the one looking at the camera not the cake!

Lindy is beginning to get to the stage when she really will play with other children now I think (not Darryl!). But she likes to run & “catch-oo” & play trains etc. She isn’t very tall, but very sweet & cute looking & when we go out everyone on the street & in the shops still smiles at her & says “Isn’t she sweet”! She is very independent & likes to walk by herself when we are out. She will walk behind the pram & in front of me “helping Mummy push Charlie”! Then she will leave that & go trotting along & say “Dindy running – Dindy walk”! We went to Joanisse this morning in the rain! Such a business getting all 3 of us ready – a good 1/2 hour! Don’t you remember Mr. Dube? The little P.O.- drug store- toy shop past Joanisse on the other side? He was the man in the cutting I sent you, who was robbed. Lindy says “Mr. Dube” very nicely!

I was very disheartened on Tuesday. Charlie’s surgeon, Dr. Wilson, says that he will need another operation and suggested April or May so that he will be a little bit older. He says this one won’t be nearly so serious but I feel so upset for the little poor little fellow. He is so good & full of chuckles & little squeals & doing so well but I know it has to be done. Must stop- Lindy sends a “kisse” & “cuddle” and xxx from Charlie. Lots of love from us all- Cyn.

March 4 1953

Wed. 4th March

Dearest Mummy,

Last weekend was the weekend I had intended to write you a long letter- instead I got nothing done & ended up feeling exhausted! The reason being Lea & Darryl coming to stay! We had heard from Cec’s mother around Christmas that Wendell had gone to Europe & Lea & Darryl were staying with his people in Cornwall (between here & Montreal). Then at Christmas we had just a short note from Lea with a book for Lindy, so we knew very little until last month we got another note from Lea saying she might come up with Darryl on the weekend of the 28th. We rang up the previous Sunday & in the meanwhile Lea had heard from her mother of little Charlie’s troubles & Darryl had had ‘flu so she had told them at the hospital that she wouldn’t take the time off, but when we told her it would be o.k. she said that she would see about it & let us know.

In the meanwhile Margie had been offering to baby sit for us & give us a chance to go to a film or something as of course we haven’t been out at all for so long, so before it got too close to her “date” we arranged for her to come on Friday [which was the 27th Feb.] & we were going to see a British film “Breaking the Sound Barrier”. I was quite excited about it as I hadn’t seen a film since about October I think- and then! We had just finished dinner & in walked Lea & Darryl! I could literally have howled & wept! Apart from not letting us know she’d said the 28th in the first place & as well as being so disappointed I had an absolutely bare cupboard! I was going to do a big shopping on Sat. & had only about four eggs & no bacon even, let alone anything else. Cec went down to the corner store & got bacon & I phoned Margie to cancel the arrangements & of course we got organized gradually, but it was a shock to my system! We opened out the day bed (which we bought when we bought the desk etc. after you left & I re-covered) in “your” little room, which I had fortunately cleaned & tidied last week (it has been a junk room since we fixed up Dan’s) & they slept there. I felt very sorry for Lea – she is in a very bad state of nerves with continual headaches etc. & is working full-time at the Hospital. Wendell is in Italy, leaving her with debts to pay off & money to send to him, while she lives with his people. Since he left, his father has had a stroke & although not paralyzed has trouble with words etc. so has to retire with a v. small pension. Apparently the mother is a possessive type- Wendell can do no wrong, business – & is the same with Darryl, & Lea longs to go home to Sask. but she opposes it- wasting money which sh’ld go to Wendell! Altogether it is a very miserable state of affairs & poor Lea is all tensed up – she nags at Darryl all the time & as he doesn’t go to bed till 10 or after they were long days & Cec & I were fair wore out. I am very sorry for the little boy, but he is dreadful- is kept shut in one small room all the time apparently, so was into everything here & is so used to being nagged at took absolutely no notice of whatever his Mother said. He took every toy Lindy touched away from her & made no attempt to play with her. Now Lindy has adopted the possessive attitude herself & everything is “Dindy’s”! Dindy’s bow-wow – Dindy’s car – Dindy’s bed etc.! By the way, she is trained. She has been wearing little panties for over a week now & tells me when she wants to “wee-wee on the potty”! Her conversation is full of it- embarrassing at times! Cec puts her on the potty when he goes to bed & she is dry through the night too. I did just as Dr. Spock says on p. 137 (192)- he does not say you sh’d start at 7- 9 months, & I think this way was fine. Must stop xxx from Lindy & Charlie & lots of love from us all- Cyn.

Just a note about Lea, Cec’s second sister, and  her husband Wendell.  He was an ordained minister and so when he had a job, the family lived in the manse in the town wherever his charge was.  He had a very fine voice, and from what I can remember, he had a chance to get training in Italy which he had always wanted, so this explains why he has given up his job and is in Europe and why Lea and Darryl (who must have been just 3) had to move in with her in-laws. Lea, as a trained nurse, was able to get a position wherever they lived, but these circumstances were hardly ideal.

Sunday 22nd (?) Feb.

Dearest Mummy,

I find that it is 2 weeks since I last wrote & I hope that you haven’t been worried about us, because we are all fine and well now. I have been meaning & meaning to write of course, but last weekend Cec & I made a concerted huge effort & got our sitting room curtains finished & up & then the previous week Lindy was just recuperating & very fretty, poor little honey, & last week we took both children to Dr. W. for check ups on Wed. (Lindy 18 mths. Charlie 2 mths.) & I went for my check up to Dr. S. on Friday, & what with one thing & another I seemed to be making formula & finishing off chores just about every evening.

Thank you so much for both your letters- written after you heard about Charlie. Also for your parcel of the sheets & little jacket & the book & baby dolly for Linda- the sheets will certainly be a great blessing as Lindy’s flannelette ones are very thin but I am going on using them until they pass out & then will have the linen ones for the summer. I can see her being most intrigued with the stitching pattern etc. as any little hole or mark is always very interesting to her! Charlie looks sweet in his little green coats. He is really a dear little fellow now – as soon as his cough & cold got better & he stopped sicking up much, he gained weight (is 10 lbs. 4 oz. now) & his little face filled out & he looks very like those first pictures of Linda we took in Eastview, except that he is very boyish looking, but his tuft of hair on top & big blue eyes etc. are just the same & there is an obvious likeness. While he was sicking I didn’t put him in any of his new little jackets, but now I am & he looks very cute & sturdy! Dr. W. said both he & Linda are fine now – he thinks Lindy speaks very well for her age- she is stringing 2 & 3 words together now & chattering away. She says “Charlie m’ baby brudder” & “Wha’s matter Charlie?” when he cries! Also if she does anything funny she grins wickedly & and says “ ‘M a monkey!” Her biggest joy is “Helping Mummy”! She puts away the spoons etc. when I wash & dry them, & tries to pull the sheets straight when we make beds & is so sweet. She is eating pretty much what we do now- she doesn’t like veg but loves potato! She is the tidiest, neatest little eater – never drops anything hardly & if she does says “Oh dear” & picks it up!

From the Baby Book- probably the last entry!

Our sitting room curtains look beautiful! I am so pleased with them & they look really very nice I think- I like the pattern of the material much more now that it is up & the colours match nearly perfectly. Cec put up the railway affair & a pull, so that we just swish them together in a most elegant way & they really look professional & such an improvement in the room, after the great blank window for so long. It was quite a business as they are so big & heavy, but they look well worth our trouble we think. About the picture for my birthday, Mummy – Cec & I both think it would be very nice as we have so little in that way, & you know my taste well enough to choose something I know I would like, so we would love to have it – thank you very much.

I will try & write a long letter this week – this seems awfully scrappy & I feel I have so many of your ? to answer! Have you heard about Ruth having a baby?! Sooner than expected, I suppose, which is a pity, but still, I don’t expect they mind too much. She has been v. sick, poor girl. Must stop- Hugs from Lindy & Charlie & Lots of love from us all – Cyn.

February 9 1953

Monday 9th Feb.

Dearest Mummy,

It is 11 AM & Linda seems to be quiet upstairs for a minute or two, & Charlie- though not quiet, is just muttering a little – so I thought I would sit for a minute & write you a note.

The first thing I want to tell you is about the little red & white dress – I measured the red tartan one Gunborg sent Lindy for her birthday & from shoulder to hem it is 17”. Linda wears that now & though it is a shade on the long side- or was about a month ago – it is a good fit, so I really feel that maybe it would be a shame to send her your little dress. All the little dresses she wore last summer can be let down I think, & when she is playing I think overalls or a sunsuit will be most sensible. It is funny to think that she will be playing in the sand pile next summer & getting really grubby, isn’t it? At the moment she wears overalls or rompers all the time unless she is dressed up for some occasion and they aren’t many nowadays! I am so sorry to have been such a long time in answering you about the little dress – I am afraid I am a very unsatisfactory correspondent just now, but when I do write I try to tell you our news & then the letter form is full. I promise to get down to answering all your B.P.X.s as soon as life is more settled. I am sorry about the little dress – I am sure it is sweet & Lindy & I would have loved it, but I just feel that she maybe wouldn’t be able to wear it much & that Joan would be thrilled with it for her Sue. I got your nice letter on Sat. (with Bren’s enclosed- I heard from her last week too) & thank you so much for it. In it you mention making overalls for Charlie out of your fawn dress (it was in the parcel, so I just packed it) & I think it would be lovely. I will send a pattern, because the little old blue overalls of Lindy’s are just about falling to bits & anyway I think it might be better to have them a little bigger. I think Charlie is going to be a bigger baby than Linda was- he is long & full of energy! Kicks all his blankets off & wiggles & squirms! He is much better now- has only sicked up one bottle in about 3 days & his cough seems just about gone. He is such a cute little fellow now – he has been smiling & laughing & saying “Coo” ever since he came home & now he is feeling better he is very jolly. He has a little button of a pointed chin with a very deep crease above & it is very “pinchable” & he laughs when you do it!

When he cries, great big tears roll down his cheeks- remember, Lindy never cried real tears? – but he does. Lindy is on the mend too, but very fretty & fractious & wants a lot of attention. She has a real runny cold now, but no temp. & she is eating a few solids though not much. She is quite content to stay in bed with her books (Ba-ba is practically a ruin!) but I have had her up for an hour or so the last 2 days. She must be asleep now – goody! – I am sterilizing the bottles & must make the formula! We got an electric bottle warmer last week – it helps the 2 a.m. feed! Charlie slept till 5 last night tho’ – the first night since his op- he coughed etc. so much last week I was up a lot with him, but that is over- I hope! Lots & lots of love – Cyn.

February 6 1953

6th Feb.  1953

Dearest Mummy,

I know you will be wondering how we are getting on, so here I am to prove that we are all still surviving – but what a week! Claire (the woman who comes to clean) was here today, & I had a sleep this afternoon, so I’m feeling quite chipper again – more like Cyn & not just “any mother”! Claire was in the hospital too, when Charlie was, so this is only the 2nd time she has been here, but she is a nice person & a good worker. She did out the sitting room thoroughly & did the floor & it looks lovely – did I tell you the curtains still aren’t up? I got everything done except the rufflette tape & ironing with Cec’s help & then going into hospital soon upset my schedule! Of course, we had to return the machine to Lee, so haven’t done anything more, but I promise myself that when things get organized again I shall hire a machine for a week & really do things! Claire also scrubbed the basement steps- of her own accord! – & did the passage & the kitchen, so we look very spic & span.

Thank you so much for your letter of 26th Jan.- and what do you think? On Tues. I got another A.M. from you & on reading it found you were thanking me for my letter telling about the plans for the Hallowe’en party! It was written on Nov. 8th & was the missing one I told you about- arrived Feb. 3! Before I forget again, thank you so much for the package with the darling little jacket for Charlie & the diary – both so welcome & useful. Charlie is doing pretty well in jackets after all- Nan sent him a sweet little Clydella coat (& Maud sent little blue bootees) & the other day Cec brought me a parcel home from Boris- the nice fellow we’ve had to dinner you know. Inside was a white knitted jacket & bootees & a note saying he whipped them up in his spare time! Actually he got his sister to make them, but wasn’t it sweet of him?

Your little jacket is the one I really like the best though – it looks so cute & sturdy & masculine!! Please thank Jeanie for me – I’ll try & write to her but goodness knows when. I’m getting quite a few letters with tender inquiries as to whether I got their parcels- A. Trixie for one! She sent a little white jacket for the baby- and- sssh!– it is sweet but so big Lindy has been wearing it!

Now for our hectic week! Well I told you what a bad cold & cough Charlie had when we brought him home. On Sat. he began sicking up his bottle- sometimes whoopsed the whole thing up- sometimes just a bit- sometimes he’d be sick just after I fed him – sometimes an hour or so afterwards. This went on all Sat. & Sun. so Mon. I called Dr. W. & he said it was just the coughing & cold & mucus on his tummy. Then on Mon. night Lindy cried out & here she had been sick all over. Poor little darling, when we put on the light & she saw it, she just said “Oh dear!” in such a pathetic little voice! She was sick 2 or 3 more times before she fell asleep again & again on Tues. morning after she had some milk so I called Dr. W. and he said it was probably the same thing caught from Charlie & most likely ‘flu. She just lay in bed listlessly & slept most of the day & by evening had a temperature of over 101˚, so Dr. W. came out & saw them both. He said after examining them that there were no complications- to keep Linda on a liquid diet & in bed. Next day her temp. was down & today is normal, but she was getting to the fractious stage! She had cereal & fruit today though & is really much better. Charlie seems better today too but has kept me on the hop the last two nights – coughing & sicking up etc. so it has all been very hectic. Cec has helped so much – stayed part of each morning etc. but I feel I have done nothing but wash sick babies – sick little clothes – sick floors & sick me! Oh – & make formula! Dr. W. says feed Charlie again when he sicks up, so sometimes he has twice as many bottles. Hasn’t sicked up today tho’ & we all feel much better. Love Cyn.

Dr. W. says Charlie must have caught a cold from baby next to him in Hosp. Only 3 in the little nursery but 1 of the babies came in with a cold.

Charlie’s operation scars are fine- don’t seem to bother him at all.

Crisis

As I said at the beginning of this project, when writing to one’s beloved mother, the writer wants her mother to be happy, so all troubles (colds, $$$, lodgers, broken-down cars) are lightly passed over and intimate problems (loneliness, depression) not shared- although Cyn did describe her aggravations and adventures and made them amusing.  It follows, then, that when actual crises occur, Cyn is telling Carol after the event when the crisis has passed, and of course the letter takes at least a week to get to her.  Only a happy event like a birth gets a telegram sent to the West Indies!

This is certainly true of January 1953. When the baby Charlie was a month old, he became quite ill and required emergency surgery, was hospitalized for a while, and Cyn had to stop breastfeeding him, which made her suffer severely too. While the Costain household must have been upset, starting with the doctor’s visit to the house (!!) and a drive to the hospital at once (Ottawa winter, snow, hospital across town, reluctant MacTavish- the doctor drove Cyn and the baby, and Cec followed once the car started), with emergency baby-sitting by the lodger, and a midnight operation; all followed by a special nurse for the first night, daily hospital visits, worries, money concerns, etc., letters went off to St. Vincent without a word about what they were going through- instead, the Christmas present list, and then a local clipping, and Linda’s vocabulary!- until two weeks later when Cyn sits down and explains what happened in an Air Mail in such frank detail that I am not including the letter! After that, there are only Air Letter forms for months, as Charlie came home from the hospital with flu caught from another sick baby and kindly shared it with the household, and required constant sterilized bottles and the making up of formula- such a curse, Cyn told her mother. Crisis over, daily life resumed, mother reassured as the letters continued through the winter describing the children and their behaviour, and how the curtains are finally being put up.

And Carol notes on the next letter about vomiting children “Things to tell Cyn- about Peter, about Margs, about African violets” so it is clear that she isn’t very worried and normal communication has resumed!

January 28 1953

I assume Cyn included this clipping with the “rest of the pictures” and was worried about the weight of the letter.

Wed. 28th Jan.

Dearest Mummy,

These are the rest of the pictures, so I won’t be able to write much. Thank you so much for your last letter of the 19th- I will get down to a proper answer to all your letters & blue crosses soon, but I am trying to write thank you letters gradually & it is taking all my energy!! Re. the pictures, I meant to tell you that Cec & I are sure that Linda remembers you- she repeats “G’annie” after us & keeps turning back to the to the pictures with you in again & again, & each time she looks she says “G’annie”. I don’t know if she realizes that it is she herself or not- she grins when we point & say “Linda” but looks as if she didn’t believe us! I didn’t realize until I saw those pictures how much her hair has changed since you saw her – it is long now – as long on her as mine is on me! – & beautifully curly! All around the sides & back & wavy on top- & we still put a bow at one side!

She looks very sweet & the long curly hair makes her look quite grown-up & not babyish. We are trying to take some pictures of Lindy & Charlie, but the weather is most uncooperative- dull & cloudy each weekend. It is cold & snowy – heavy fall last night & today – but very few of those sunny, clear cold days that we had last winter. Must stop now as I want to add a list of as much of Lindy’s vocabulary as I can remember, so that you will get some idea of how much she is talking. She will tell a story now, like “Daddy – car – snow.  Bye-bye Daddy”!

Lots & lots of love from all of us – XXX from Lindy XXX from Charlie

In fact, I had always been told my first sentence was: “Dan, ski,  up-si-daisy!” as I watched him from the window…

Christmas 1952

There were two events to be celebrated. The first was the birth of the baby, and a son at that, so that now they had one of each. Congratulations-such as ‘Clever girl’ on the telegram from her 5 Newcastle friends; best wishes; plants; and chocolates arrived at the hospital for Cyn.

When she and Charlie came home from hospital, and Cec and Linda returned from their stay at the Ganders, the Costains celebrated Christmas a bit late, and Cyn later sent her mother the usual list of the loot!

Cec, Cyn, & Lindy’s Christmas Presents 1952

From:

Grannie.    You know!

Gunborg.   Blanket holders– they are green plastic ducks & their beaks open on a spring & hold the blanket & then there are ribbons attached to tie it to the top of the crib. (We don’t need these now- she keeps under the covers nicely)

Coloured wooden toy shaped like this [see above] There are coloured wooden rings to fit over the post & she loves putting them on and off.

Dan.           “Stripey to the Rescue”-a nice little book but a bit old for her, so I have put it away.

Wooden Build – a -Train – this is a dear little train which takes apart & puts together very simply & with big pieces. Linda quite can’t quite manage the building yet, so she can “unbuild” it very successfully! She pushes it along and says “Woo-hoo” like trains here do!

Amy etc.    3 woolie jackets for Charlie- all the same pattern as the ones she sent before – two little blue ones & one bigger white one with a blue edging. A white lamb for Lindy. She is quite fond of it but prefers her old pink bunny & the Teddy Dottie sent her – but on the whole she doesn’t bother with that kind of toy much.

Connie & LeonardA scarf for Lindy – very nice & soft & warm – camel hair coloured.                      Illustrated for us – a year’s subscription I presume & am I embarrassed as we only sent a card!

Mrs. AllanHankies for Lindy- they are done up so cutely to look like a little folded umbrella.

Jessie & NormanPanties for me – very pretty white ones with frills!

                    Diary for Cec.

Dress, cardigan & toys for Linda! The dress is a sweet little white silk one & fits her nicely now. It is quite plain except for a little embroidery on the skirt & has a little round colour & buttons down the front. The cardigan is just lovely – the prettiest one I’ve seen.

It is white with pale pastel pink, blue & green knitted in every few rows like those jumpers Anne made for me ages ago. It is a bit big which is nice too. The toys are really a little young for her but will come in nicely for Charlie- a rattle like a bird in a cage & a pink plastic phone which is a rattle two & a comb & ring in pink to match.

Miss Lefroy – “Animal ABC” for Lindy & a little book for me.

Irene – Diary for me.

Tie for Cec– dark red & gold – a bit startling I think but not too bad & Cec is wearing it!

Bib for Charlie.

Blue sandals for Lindy. These are rather sweet little things made of kind of plastic material but unfortunately are too small for her. She got so mad when we couldn’t get them on & tried to take them away – she howled & demanded them back & kept trying to put them on, so we had to make them disappear! Hope she will have forgotten them by the time Charlie gets them!

Nan.      Play Balls– this is a clever toy to0- a stick on a stand & hollow coloured plastic balls which thread on it. This is a bit like Gunborg’s but more difficult so I put it away for a rainy day! Nan said in the letter that my present was coming with a little one for Charlie, but they haven’t arrived yet.

Granny & Grandpa Costain – Socks for Cec- nylon.

Gloves for me – very pretty white wool ones with a tiny bit of red embroidery with pearls! Writing paper for me too.

Panties for Linda – very sweet little pink ones with embroidery! Did I tell you Granny C. had also sent her a pair of white overalls to match her white corduroy coat & a sweet little lace trimmed bonnet? Two little bonnets really-  a tiny one for the baby.

Margie, Cy etc.Cigarettes for Cec.

             Chocolates for me (in hospital)

Blocks for Linda – these are hollow square ones with pictures on, that fit inside each other.

Rattle for Charlie.

Mrs. BurroughPlant for me (in hospital)-pretty African violet.

DottieMagazines for me- Vogue- Ladies Home Journal etc.

“One Upmanship” for Cec- a funny book

“Peter Rabbit” Hankie, Toothbrush Apron for Linda. Lindy just loves “Peter Rabbit”- she calls him “Petey” & he & “Baa-Baa” are her two favourites & I’m afraid are getting a little worn looking!! The apron is a little big, but sweet.

After 68 years, it is a little worn!

Auntie Muriel–  Calendar for us all.

Bar–     Brooch for me- pretty & small

Golliwog for Lindy- just tiny (about 4”) and made of pipe cleaners- has a red & yellow coat.

Til & LoisPetticoat for Linda – so sweet & grown-up – white silk with lace edge & shoulder straps!!

Tile & ashtray for us a greeny-yellow pottery. Cec & I think they are rather horrid, but apparently C’Zelma does them & sells them.

Lu, Pete, etc. Panties for Lindy – just like Granny C’s but white!

                     Notepaper for me.

                     Crackles for Charlie.

Phyl DouglasNotes for me (in hospital)

A Trix–       White baby jacket for Charlie – very nice – a bit big & in fact Linda has been wearing it although the sleeves are short!

Lea, Wendy etc.- “Mother Goose”– a nice little nursery rhyme book with pretty pictures.

Mary & Bill StuartDress & panties for Linda. These are really lovely- handmade by Mary of pale blue, white-dotted Dayella with white smocking – just right in size- maybe a little big.

Daddy & Lindy to Mummy.

Sweater – long sleeved, buttoned down the front- dark red with tiny white pearl buttons & very nice.

                 Nylons– goody-goody!

Slippers– I got these early to go into hospital. They are black quilted satin & are both elegant & lovely & comfy.

Cutting out scissors– a lovely pair from Singer’s.

Pulley Cec made for me in the basement. Did I tell you about it? He made it & fixed it up all as a surprise for me while I was in the hospital – wasn’t it perfectly sweet of him?

Mummy & Linda to Daddy

                Cigarettes box of 50

                “Murder Must Advertise”

Wool scarf (grey)               These were surprises!

2 Shirts- u.shorts & 3 prs socks he had to have & we got together!

Daddy &  Mummy to Lindy –

Cleaning Set – Cec got this while I was in H. It is just cute- a little mop, carpet sweeper, broom, dustpan, hand mop & duster – also a tiny apron – so that she can help me clean! She loves them & carpet sweeps with great energy!

Rubber car with Donald Duck in.

Blocks made of wood with alphabet & pictures on.

Doggie playing a little xylophone which pulls along on a string and goes “plink-plonk”! She gets a lot of fun out of this & is just beginning to get the idea of pulling – she much preferred to push things at first but will do both now.

Dolly – a cloth doll with a rubber head about 1 1/2 feet long – it is a boy doll in blue pyjamas & she has him in bed with her. Before Christmas she seemed crazy for “babies” but now she seems to like her wooden toys more. [I always thought, after I started reading Dr. Spock at the age of 8 or so, that this doll, Tommy, was psychological genius on my parents’ part. Tommy was about the size of my brother, so not only did I now have cleaning tools to help my mother, I also had a baby to dress and cuddle and put to bed.]

Musical book – this is a musical box in the form of a book with the story & pictures in the front. We chose “Mary had a little lamb” & think it is lovely- Lindy is a bit doubtful! she can’t quite turn the handle yet.

Lee, Jim, & BarryWooden toy to pull – it has a little bell & tinkles as she pulls it.

I think that is all! Aren’t we all lucky? Particularly our little daughter! Poor little Charlie didn’t get anything from Mummy and Daddy you’ll notice, but we’ll make up for it later!

Still with a King George VI stamp, although he’d died in February.

Christmas Day

Dearest Mummy,

Just a short letter on Christmas Day to tell you that Charlie & I are both doing beautifully & feeling so well that we are practically bouncing. I didn’t mind being here for Christmas at all really, & the hospital has certainly try to make everything just as nice as possible. The little student nurses all got up at 5.0 a.m. & came around & sang carols- on our floor they sang “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” “Away in a Manger” & “Holy Night” & afterwards they told us that the night nurses had fixed up a little nativity scene & got one of the real little babies & put him in the manger & he just lay & slept there quite peacefully while the girls sang. I have such a nice girl in the next bed to me (a room like A.A.- just 4 beds) & she had a radio so this morning while we were washing ourselves in bed & feeding our babes we listened to the “Round the World” broadcast from London & then the Queen. Of course I lay & wept heartily & thoroughly enjoyed myself!

We had our Christmas Dinner at noon & the trays looked so pretty. A little Christmas tree decorated with stars & candy at the bottom on each one, & our names on a fancy card & a little Menu & gay napkin. We had turkey & plum pudding & all the trimmings & this evening for supper we had ham & Christmas cake & even a tangerine & grapes & a cracker.

Cec came in this afternoon & told me all the fun of Lindy opening her presents – I had just 2 here- a pair of nylons from Cec & a lovely dark red long sleeved sweater from Lindy. We are going home tomorrow afternoon, so will open all the rest then – Cec has a tree all ready for us, so it will be another Christmas all over! Thank you for your lovely Christmassy cable – we are all thinking of you & send love & kisses

Another Baby!

21st Dec. 1952

Dearest Mummy,

By now you will know the little old Algy snuck up on us & arrived early! And if I thought Linda was a funny looking little baby, I should have seen this one first!! He is quite the wierdest little fellow I ever saw!! He was 7 lbs. 6 oz. at birth & unlike Lindy, was like a little boiled lobster & still is very red & angry looking. He has lots of dark hair too, but it is like a bristly crew cut & his little face is all scrunched up!

Aren’t we clever having a boy? He is to be Charlie as we couldn’t think of anything better! Actually, it was in the car going to the hospital that we decided, so you can see how long the discussing lasted! If it was a girl we thought of Cynthia Clare, but we can store that one up!

On that morning I got up & felt fine, but a bit odd & a sort of pressure on the bottom of my tummy, but there was no show or anything. Cec went off to work & Lindy & I did the usual chores- I had had the cleaning woman & she was marvellous & had cleaned through the whole house, so I felt very pleased. I began to get funny pains & odd feelings during the morning, but couldn’t decide if it was anything or not. However I didn’t go shopping to Joanisse as I had planned & when I put Lindy to bed & had my lunch I began timing the feelings & found that they were coming regularly. So I dashed & had a bath & washed my hair!! Wrote notes for the milkman etc. packed my case, Lindy’s case, & Algy’s case (all ready except for last minute things really) & then phoned Cec. He was in a Seminar & of course everyone knew why he had to get up & leave! All afternoon the pains were irregular & I sat & ironed shirts & Cec & I had a nice chat & cups of tea! I called Dr. S. & the nurse said she tell him but didn’t think there was any hurry. He called about 6 & the pains were regular & he said to go in about an hour. We put Lindy to bed & Cy came over & baby sat & Cec took me to the Hospital.

He had to just leave me there- not allowed to stay- & I got going very quickly. Not as nice as last time – I know lots more about labour pains & nothing about what happened at the birth- was just flat out. They woke me & told me it was a boy & I just looked vaguely at the little bundle & went to sleep again. Cec came (the babe was born at 11.0 p.m.) about 12:30 & saw us both. I am feeling fine – stitches a bit sore, but no tail trouble this time, thank goodness. Was up this morning for a little. Cec says Lindy is having a grand time with Barrie. Lots of love from Cyn & the grandson!
